ALL TUNESS members are horrified this morning following the dreadful event that caused the life of one of Tunisia’s most prominent opposition figures, Mr. Chokri Belaid. TUNESS condemns in the strongest terms this political assassination and calls for an urgent action of the local authorities to bring to justice all perpetrators of this horrible act. No one in Tunisia post-revolution should be left outside the scope of justice or allowed to kill or put the lives of others at risk without a severe punishment including any political party and/or self-proclaimed violent groups.
We also call for eradicating the culture of impunity which seems to have become prevalent and which allowed for many violent factions to openly call for the prosecution and murder of political opponents and which allowed way too many crimes to go unpunished.
We hope that Mr. Belaid's death will be a wake-up call to all political actors and elements of the civil society that we need to unite as Tunisians to protect our revolutions and that the political gridlock which is dividing Tunisia should be stopped at once.
We once again express our deepest sympathies and sorrow to the family of Mr. Chokri Belaid, May He Rest In Peace, and we send our prayers to his family, friends and colleagues and all those who have stood with him when he was restlessly fighting the dictatorship of the former regime.
