Microblogging through Twitter has made information short and to the point, and more importantly systematically searchable. This work is the first of a series in which quotidian observations about Tunisia are obtained using the microblogging site Twitter. Data were extracted using the open-source Twitter API v1.1. Specific tweets were obtained using functional search operators in particular thematic hashtags, geolocation, date, time, and language. This article studies Tunisia’s economic performance in the world stage during the last 50 years. I describe various historical weaknesses and provide policy recommendations in order to alleviate hurdles, break the cycle of chronic mediocrity, and insure the brighter future I believe we are capable of achieving as a nation. I show that Tunisia’s share of world GDP has not changed in the last 50 years, leading to what I refer to as “the Lost Five Decades.”The Tunisian dinar (TND) has been continuously devaluating during this period reducing the purchasing power of every Tunisian.

The latest popular uprising in Tunisia has very often been described as the result of a distorted labor market that has not been able to absorb the growing flow of young and educated labor force. While this description does provide useful insights into the roots of the Tunisian revolution, one must not overlook the other macroeconomic factors that had, over time, fueled the popular discontent. The increasing cost of living had aggravated the vulnerability of large segments of the population that felt totally marginalized by the system in place. Very few researchers had attempted to explore the underlying factors that influence the dynamics of the inflation rate movements in Tunisia. In this note, we follow the recent strand of research by applying a Structural Vector Autoregressive model (SVAR) to shed some light on some of the channels, both contemporaneous and lagged ones, through which shocks to macroeconomic variables influence the inflation rate dynamics in Tunisia.
